I've noticed several guys wearing leather harnesses on their belt to carry their drinking horn and i don't have any reference material on such items. my basic theory is that if items like this are made using authentic materials and techniques they are acceptable, but without any historical evidence behind them they're not really quite right.
does anyone have any documentation or thoughts to share?
yes. don't use horns.
As far as I know, drinking horns were found in Latene and Hallstatt-era celtic graves. Also there are references of latin authors about the "germans inbibing themselves from the horns of cows" (Tacitus, Germania). But there are, again as far as I know, NO evidence of drinking horns in daily use in Scandinavia in the viking era. There is, though, one disputed find (Norway, I think it's Borre), were a horn tip made of silver was found... back at the beginning of the 20th century. So there is still doubt about WHAT it really was.
My suggestion: stay with the proven thing - use pottery or glas.

I would not link horns from VIIth century, because it's not a viking age - there are approx 6 horns from this time.

Århus, Dannmark:
Balinaby, Hebrides:
Danish National Museum:
Birka:
Vinjum, Aurland - Norway XI century:
Skedsmo, Akershus, Norway:
Ah, there are all scandinavian horns. There are still slavic, rus and other horns. Also see some runic stones and even Bayeux Tapestry
To stay 'to the topic': who needs to carry a drinking horn on belt? It's a nonsens. Same as wearing glass (from birka e.x.) on belt. It's a house/temple/stronghold equipment.

Holding horn on belt it's only our 'reenactors' idea.
Hunting horns are another topic.

all right! i bow to thy wisdom!
now that you delivered the evidence i humbly refrain from from my position. but i'm in it with you on one thing: glasses, horns etc. are household-stuff, nothing to be carried on a belt.
